Appointment not really necessary
I took my Dad to the Elderly Care Clinic recently. It is a very difficult process as we have to use the wheelchair taxi service to get there and back in a reasonable length of time. We were at the hospital about 25 minutes in total which is a record I am sure. The consultant asked my Dad how he was, then asked me the same question although my Dad is perfectly capable of speaking for himself. A blood test was ordered and a follow up appointment was arranged for 6 months forward. Couldn't see the point of the trip really, nothing that his GP couldn't have done for him. Consultant not the greatest of bed side manners. Not advised of appointment, found out he had one by coincidence.
