Here at Healthwatch Calderdale, we have recently completed our latest work into people’s experiences of accessing medication.
This project was prompted by our initial engagement into people’s experiences of Covid-19, with over 200 people telling us they had some challenges accessing medication.
We have further explored 3 areas:
- Changes to medication;
- Medication reviews;
- Support of others to obtain medication.
Our latest feedback, in the report below, shows near-universal support for the service delivered by pharmacies. Patients told us how much they have valued the role of pharmacy staff with home deliveries; extra checks and even pharmacy staff providing clarity on medications.
In line with feedback nationwide, accessing medication reviews and information via GPs had been challenging for some patients. This largely concerns the continuity of care for patients with long-standing health needs. As our recommendations highlight, often improving communication between the health worker and patient would improve the patient experience.
The report has been shared with NHS organisations who provide local NHS health care. All responses from partner organisations will be shared on our website.
