Good but hard to find

Outpatients
December 8, 2022
I've never had a problem with my appointments, good care.
The first time I came here for an appointment I found it so confusing to try to find outpatient department, I thought it would be easier to find a second time round but I found it just as hard again, its a bit of a maze.

Waste of time

Outpatients
December 8, 2022
I waited 35 minutes for what was a less than 5 minute appointment where I was just told some information which could have be told to me over the phone or in a letter. I'm 83 years old and its not the easiest for me to get out of the house and travel to the hospital. Waste of my time and waste of a valuable NHS appointment.

Busy and overcrowded waring area

December 8, 2022
I have to come for my eye check here twice a year and the waiting area is always busy and overcrowded. I waited for 40 after my appointment time today and eventually when I went to the reception desk to ask how long my appointment would be I was told I had already been called. If I had I think I missed it because it's so loud and chaotic in the waiting area.

The staff are excellent and provides great care and I have always been treated with respect here which is not the case in other hospitals I have been to. No improvements are needed, it's a brilliant hospital in my eyes.

long wait for appointment

Ophthalmology
December 8, 2022
After my referral, I was sent a letter with an appointment within 1 month. Unfortunately, the date for the appointment was not appropriate for me so I called the department to change it. It was really straightforward to cancel my appointment and was told I would be contacted with another date. However, a fortnight later I had still not heard anything so I rang up to chase it and I was told a letter had been sent to me (which I did not receive) but the receptionist was able to tell me over the phone when the appointment was for. I was shocked to hear there was almost a 6 month wait and I was told this was the next available appointment. The wait was a little frustrating given that my initial appointment given for only a month after the referral was made so I did feel like I was being punished for not being able to make the appointment but i suppose that's just the way it is.

Well looked after

Accident and emergency services
December 8, 2022
I recently came into A+E with possible stroke symptoms and I was well looked after by all the staff I saw. I was seen to almost straight away which was reassuring.
I did have to wait some time for some test but my wife was able to stay with me which I apricated as she was extremally anxious - when I was taken for a scan the nurses kept my wife informed and I felt they went the extra mile for us to make sure it was less of a traumatic experience as much as possible.
I was discharged later that day with lots of information about what happens next and what to do if symptoms came back. I received a follow-up call from the stroke nurse the next day and they contacted my GP to discuss a change to my medication.

Peace of mind

September 26, 2022
I visited the pre-assessment maternity department as I was worried about baby's movements. I was seen quickly, monitored for an hour and reassured.
This service is so important to reducing worry and anxiety during pregnancy, the staff were supportive.

Regular patient

September 26, 2022
I have to attend for renal services frequently, sometimes three or four times a month. The service is very good & I cannot fault the staff.
The waiting time and appointment can be a few hours from arriving to leaving so it is expensive to park here as frequently as I have to attend.

Well supported in A&E

Accident and emergency services

Had to bring daughter to Calderdale Royal A&E with a broken arm. We were seen quickly, sent for a scan and cast fitted very quickly. My daughter was given a teddy to cuddle during moments she may have felt a little worried, a nurse also gave her a bandage to put onto the teddy which she loved.
All staff have been lovely and helpful.
