Super service generally

The appointment system is really good. I was not kept hanging around and was seen fairly promptly. I was dealt with professionally and efficiently. Generally speaking it's a super service both in Calderdale and in Huddersfield.
On the appointment letters, the date the letter was sent is in bold rather than the appointment date and that can be confusing.

Appointment not really necessary

Geriatric Medicine

I took my Dad to the Elderly Care Clinic recently. It is a very difficult process as we have to use the wheelchair taxi service to get there and back in a reasonable length of time. We were at the hospital about 25 minutes in total which is a record I am sure. The consultant asked my Dad how he was, then asked me the same question although my Dad is perfectly capable of speaking for himself. A blood test was ordered and a follow up appointment was arranged for 6 months forward. Couldn't see the point of the trip really, nothing that his GP couldn't have done for him. Consultant not the greatest of bed side manners. Not advised of appointment, found out he had one by coincidence.

Good but....

Ultra Sound
April 4, 2016
Attended hospital Friday 11am with suspected DVTs . Blood test confirmed likelihood of their presence. I was told that no appointments for the ultra sound scan needed to confirm their presence were left that day and that I would have to wait until Monday. Admittedly the scan department were efficient in ringing me on the Monday morning and the scan itself was carried out efficiently.
I do question though whether the department needs more hours/needs to be open at weekends to cope with the demand if my experience is anything to go by.
Parking in the main car park was the usual nightmare. The queue was back onto Salterhebble Hill and causing chaos.

Attended with suspected DVTs (later confirmed). Very efficient service from staff nurses and doctors. Particularly appreciated being kept informed of progress of tests.

The Extra Mile

Endocrinology

I know that hospitals generally get a bad rep but I can honestly say that in my experience, Calderdale Royal is pretty good. I've had an ongoing health problem for the last 6 years which needs regular monitoring and blood tests so I've certainly been there quite a bit! Yes, I have had to wait for up to an hour sometimes because appointments/bloods are busy or running late but when I get to see my consultant I feel he really listens to me and doesn't rush me out the door. In fact, I feel like he's really gone the extra mile by prescribing a slightly less mainstream medication for me when the traditional treatments were failing. This concern for my well-being and willingness to really listen to how I'm feeling has made a huge difference to my life and for that I am truly grateful. So with this in mind, I can forgive them the rubbish new appointment system and the lack of car parking spaces because I think that they excel at what truly matters - the quality of care they provide to their community.
